Gavin Head

The Great Wagon Road was the most important Colonial American route for settlers of the mountainous backcountry. It went from Philadelphia to the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. One fork went to the Tennessee Valley and Knoxville and the other to the Piedmont Region of North Carolina.

Gavin Head was born on July 3, 1772 in Washington County, Virginia. His father was Anthony Head.

Gavin married Catherine Hensley. Catherine was born on March 8, 1778 in Washington County, Virginia. Her father was Samuel Hensley.

Gavin and Catherine's children may have included:
Alfred Head
William Head 1804

Gavin was listed on the tax lists of Washington County, Virginia from 1794 to 1800.

On October 22, 1800, Gavin was recommended as a Lieutenant in the Washington County militia in the 2nd Battalion as a replacement for Richard Fulkerson.

Gavin resigned as Lieutenant of the 2nd Battalion on May 17, 1803.

In 1810 the household was still in Washington County.

Sometime after 1814, the family moved to Missouri.

In 1830 the household was in Boone County, Missouri.

The family moved to Saline County sometime during the 1830's.

Catherine Head was listed as head of household on the 1840 census in Saline County.


A militia is a military unit composed of citizens who are called up in time of need.
